On Sunday, the Israeli Transport Ministry announced a nationwide reform of public transport fares set to begin on Monday. The reform, called “Transport Fairness,” is described as the largest revolution ever in Israel’s public transportation system and is expected to result in significant savings for families.
As part of the reform, soldiers who have completed their regular service and those who have finished alternative national service will receive free bus and train travel for a year as a gesture of appreciation for their service to the country’s security. Discounts will also be offered to passengers under the age of 26 and residents of low socioeconomic status in northern and southern Israeli cities and towns.
The second phase of the reform, scheduled to be implemented in a few months, will extend free travel benefits to women aged 62 and older and men aged 67 and older, replacing the previous threshold of 75 years and older.
Miri Regev, the Israeli Transport Minister, stated that the goal of the reform is to bridge the gap between peripheral regions and urban centers, reduce geographical and social inequalities, create employment opportunities, lower the cost of living, and promote the use of public transportation.
Regev emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of those who serve in the defense forces and alternative national service by providing them with free travel options. The discounts for young passengers and residents of disadvantaged areas aim to make public transport more accessible and affordable for a wider range of people.
By offering free travel to older adults at a lower age threshold, the reform seeks to enhance mobility and independence for senior citizens, enabling them to participate more fully in community activities and access essential services without financial barriers.
