JERUSALEM, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — The Israeli Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced on Wednesday that Israel plans to increase its annual natural gas exports from the Tamar field to Egypt to 3.5 billion cubic meters. This expansion has been approved by Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz and is scheduled to commence in 2026, as stated in the ministry’s official statement.
The ministry emphasized that this increase in gas exports will potentially generate billions of dollars in revenue for Israel while also strengthening political relationships with Egypt and other regional countries. In 2022, only 0.86 billion cubic meters of Tamar gas was exported to Egypt, according to the ministry’s data.
This planned increase can be accomplished through the expansion of Tamar’s production capacity. The production volume is projected to grow from 10.3 billion cubic meters in the previous year to approximately 16 billion per year.
In order to facilitate Tamar’s expansion, which is pending a final investment decision by the authorized partners in the field, a third transmission pipeline will be added and production equipment will be upgraded.
The ministry is also exploring the option of expanding the nearby Leviathan gas field.
According to the ministry’s records, Israel produced 11.58 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Leviathan last year, out of which 4.95 billion cubic meters were exported to Egypt.
