On Sunday, Israel’s Ministry of Transport and Road Safety revealed a plan to create solar and energy storage systems alongside Highway 6, also known as Cross Israel or Trans-Israel Highway.

According to a statement from the ministry, the project involves installing clean energy facilities at the highway’s interchanges, connecting them to the national electricity grid, and providing about 100 megawatts of power.

The project has been awarded to Shikun & Binui Energy, a leading Israeli company, through a government tender with a cost of 500 million shekels (approximately 134 million U.S. dollars).

The ministry highlighted that the primary goal of the project is to generate clean energy, ultimately reducing the reliance on expensive and polluting fossil fuels and diminishing Israel’s dependence on imported oil.

Stretching 192 km from the Galilee region in the north to the Negev desert in the south, the Trans-Israel highway is planned to be extended on both ends in the future.

The ministry emphasized that the project marks another step in the shift towards renewable and clean energy, which includes the gradual electrification of all trains and buses.
