An Israeli biotech company has created food packaging made from fungi to reduce plastic pollution, according to the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA). The IIA highlighted the significant environmental impact of the food packaging sector, particularly from plastic usage and waste production. Additionally, the production of packaging materials such as plastic, glass, and metal contributes to carbon emissions and resource consumption. To combat these issues, MadeRight, a sustainable packaging startup, developed a circular economy model using organic industrial waste as nutrients to cultivate fungi.
MadeRight’s process involves growing fungi through fermentation on a substrate made of industrial organic waste. The fungi are then transformed into high-value biomaterials, which are used to create customized packaging for various industries. The company emphasized that fungi possess qualities suitable for large-scale production, including rapid growth, year-round availability, and adaptability to all climates.
MadeRight’s packaging solution is recyclable, durable, and utilizes materials that are widely accessible from diverse sources. This approach minimizes the need for transporting raw materials and subsequently reduces carbon emissions.
