ALOR SETAR: The battle for Jeneri will see a straight fight between incumbent Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor of PAS and his rival from Umno, Datuk Muhamad Khizri Abu Kasim.
The state Perikatan Nasional chairman arrived at the nomination centre at the Sik Land and District office at about 9.15am accompanied by a party agent.
Clad in green Baju Melayu and sampin, the caretaker mentri besar was seen smiling when members of the media took photos of him as he walked while raising his hands all the way to nomination centre.
Muhammad Sanusi drew comments that he resembled a groom on his way to his wedding and replied, in jest, that the bride and groom were already at the nomination centre.
In the 14th General Election, Sanusi won the Jeneri seat after defeating Barisan’s Mahadzir Abdul Hamid and Pakatan candidate Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan with a 2,455 majority.
Earlier, Perikatan’s Belantek candidate Ahmad Sulaiman from PAS arrived at the nomination centre at about 9am to file his nomination.
Shortly after that, Muhamad Khizry and Mazli arrived with their proposer and seconder.
The Belantek seat will also see a straight fight between Ahmad and Mazli, both of whom are newcomers.
The Belantek seat was held by PAS through Datuk Mohd Isa Shafie who defeated Barisan Datuk Mohd Tajudin Abdullah and Pakatan candidate Abdul Rashid Abdullah with a 2,574-vote majority.
Mohd Isa passed away in June.
At 10.30am, Election Commission returning officers for Jeneri and Belantek Mahamad Suhaimi Man and Mohd Hilmi Marzuki, respectively, announced that the nominations were closed.
