KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless man was sentenced to two years in jail by the Sessions Court here for ramming and crashing into police motorcycles as he tried to flee from being detained.

Lee Soon Heng, 45, pleaded guilty after the charge was read out before Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nidzuwan Abd Latip asked the court to impose a just sentence on the accused.

He told the court that the accused was currently serving a one-year prison sentence for driving a stolen car, which was also the vehicle he used in the present case.

Lawyer Simret Singh from the National Legal Aid Foundation sought for minimal prison time for the accused from the date of arrest, on grounds that the accused came from a poor family and that he was remorseful of his actions.

Judge Siti Shakirah then meted out the sentence and ordered for the jail time to run from the date of arrest on Sept 23.

According to the charge sheet, Lee was accused of driving a car, ramming and crashing into two motorcycles which were ridden by two policemen aged 36 and 28 years old, where the action could cause death.

The offence was committed at a traffic light at Jalan Segambut at about 12.50pm on Sept 23.

The charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 10 years imprisonment and can be fined, upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Lee was about to be detained by the policemen on their motorcycles before he crashed into the men in blue to escape.
