Thousands of Johoreans gathered at Senai International Airport in Johor Baru to welcome back state Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar after he was named the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The Sultan arrived at the royal hangar on Sunday (Oct 29), where he was received by Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim and his younger princes. People from all walks of life, including students, civil servants, and ordinary individuals, lined the route from the airport to the palace, waving the Johor flag and shouting “Daulat Tuanku” as Sultan Ibrahim’s motorcade passed.
Sultan Ibrahim, who personally drove the limousine, rolled down his window to acknowledge the warm greetings and wave at the masses. A photograph of the crowd welcoming the Sultan at the airport can be seen below:
After leaving the airport, Sultan Ibrahim headed to Istana Bukit Serene, where he was greeted by Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah. She gave him a tight embrace and congratulated him on his election. Sultan Ibrahim was unanimously elected as the 17th King of Malaysia during a special meeting of the Conference of Rulers held at Istana Negara on October 27th. His term will officially begin on January 31, 2024.
He will succeed the current King, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the Sultan of Pahang, whose five-year term will come to an end on January 30, 2024. It has been 39 years since Almarhum Sultan Iskandar was proclaimed as Malaysia’s 8th King in 1984.
