Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stated that there is no issue regarding the appointment of 373 Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) members in Selangor. He clarified that the authority to appoint these committee members falls under his ministry, and not the state government.
Ahmad Zahid emphasized that the offer to appoint JPKK members is coming from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, and not from the state government. He made these comments during a visit to the Civil Defence Force’s headquarters on January 24.
This statement follows the development in appointing JPKK members in Selangor, which was demanded by Umno after rejecting the offer of 20 state councillor spots. Earlier, Selangor Umno decided to allocate the quota of 20 local council positions in Selangor to Pakatan Harapan.
Instead, Selangor Umno chose to pursue the JPKK positions in the state. Selangor Umno chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin reportedly explained that the party’s decision to return the 20 local council posts was not a form of protest but to counter allegations of being “greedy” and “demanding.”
He pointed out that 20 out of the 288 local council positions constituted only 7%, and also expressed Umno’s desire to hold all 373 village development and security committee chairman positions in Selangor.
