ALOR SETAR: According to Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, there has been a shift of support towards Barisan Nasional in several areas that were previously considered difficult to break through. The Kedah Barisan chairman noted that these areas are now more receptive towards the coalition, and as polling day approaches, the momentum of support can be felt. “There is a strong desire among the people for Barisan to govern the state, even though Perikatan Nasional claimed to have the support,” said Mahdzir in a statement on Friday (Aug 4). He also mentioned that the momentum seems to be increasing in all 15 state seats that Barisan is contesting, indicating a widespread desire for the coalition’s return to power.
According to Mahdzir, Perikatan initially aimed for the same momentum that won them support in the 15th General Election (GE15), but that support has now shifted in Barisan’s favor. He attributed this shift to Barisan’s efforts to establish close connections with the people. “In Kedah, we consider ourselves underdogs as we are opposing the incumbent state government,” added Mahdzir.
As the Barisan candidate for Pedu in the upcoming Aug 12 election, Mahdzir expressed confidence that the people of Kedah will choose candidates who prioritize effective work over populism. He stressed the importance of considering candidates’ service records to ensure that the people’s aspirations are fulfilled.
Mahdzir also urged the Barisan election machinery and supporters to refrain from using abusive language during the campaign and ceramah, reminding them not to follow the rhythm of their rivals.
