IPOH: Keep politics away from the Merdeka Day celebrations, says Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Md Halim.

He said that the proposal by Perikatan Nasional Youth leader Ahmad Fadhli Shaari to use different themes and logos for the celebrations in the four Perikatan-ruled states is wrong and should not be done.

“National Day is celebrated by the whole nation. It does not involve political parties or their ideologies,” he said at a press conference after opening the Perak Fit Malaysia programme at the state Youth and Sports Complex here on Sunday (Aug 20).

“To me, it is wrong that some parties want a different theme as if there will be separare celebrations. I hope they will not do it. I feel it is a political consideration,” he added.

Ahmad Fadhli was reported to have said that Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu could use a different logo and theme that is different from the one announced by the Federal Government for the celebrations.

The Perikatan Youth’s logo depicts the hibiscus flower with five petals which is the national flower, taking the colours found in the Jalur Gemilang with the theme of “Teguh Muafakat Malaysia Sejahtera (Strong Consensus for a Prosperous Malaysia).

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Md Halim has called for politics to be kept away from the celebrations of Merdeka Day. His statement comes after the proposal made by Perikatan Nasional Youth leader Ahmad Fadhli Shaari to use different themes and logos for the celebrations in the four Perikatan-ruled states. According to Adam Adli, National Day is meant to be celebrated by the whole nation and should not involve political parties or their ideologies. He expressed his views during a press conference while inaugurating the Perak Fit Malaysia programme at the state Youth and Sports Complex in Ipoh on Sunday, August 20.

Adam Adli believes that the idea of having different themes and logos for the Merdeka Day celebrations in different states is wrong and should not be implemented. He hopes that political parties would not push for separate celebrations based on this proposal, as he sees it as a political consideration rather than a genuine effort to celebrate the nation. Ahmad Fadhli had suggested that Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu could use a different logo and theme for the celebrations, distinct from the one announced by the Federal Government.

The logo presented by Perikatan Youth features the hibiscus flower with five petals, which is the national flower, incorporating the colors found in the Jalur Gemilang. The theme chosen for the logo is “Teguh Muafakat Malaysia Sejahtera” (Strong Consensus for a Prosperous Malaysia). However, Adam Adli emphasizes that regardless of the proposed logo and theme, Merdeka Day celebrations should remain unified throughout the country.

Merdeka Day, celebrated on August 31 each year, marks Malaysia’s independence from colonial rule. It is a significant occasion for Malaysians to commemorate their nation’s freedom and unity as a multi-ethnic and multicultural society. The day is usually marked with various activities, including parades, cultural performances, and fireworks displays. The spirit of unity and inclusiveness should prevail during these celebrations, as it represents the bonds that hold Malaysia together as a diverse nation.
