JELI: On Tuesday (Jan 17), the Kelantan Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) relocated a wild male elephant in Kampung Kalai, Batu Melintang. This decision was made after the department received a complaint that the elephant had been encroaching on villagers’ farms and causing damage.
Mohamad Hafid Rohani, the director of Kelantan Perhilitan, explained that the elephant was captured on Jan 11 by seven personnel from the Kelantan Elephant Capture Unit during an operation to address the issue. He also mentioned that the wild elephant will be relocated to a national park or a safe habitat in order to prevent further conflict with humans.
To facilitate the relocation process, two elephants from the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Lanchang, Pahang, were brought in as “denak” (tamers). According to Mohamad Hafid, this wild elephant has unfortunately become a part of the human-elephant conflict, which is exacerbated by the proximity of the villagers’ farms to the Gunung Basor Permanent Forest Reserve that borders the Temenggor forest reserve in Perak.
He also stated that the relocation of the wild elephant is not a long-term solution to the problem at hand.
