As of 10am in the Kemaman by-election in Chukai, only 18 percent of voters had turned out to vote, as reported by the Election Commission (EC).
The EC noted that the voter turnout had doubled from nine percent at 9am to 18 percent at 10am.
There are 49 polling centres and 244 polling streams for the Kemaman by-election that opened at 8am on Saturday (Dec 2).
The polling stations in four districts – Kemasik, Kijal, Chukai and Air Putih – are scheduled to close at 6pm.
For the by-election, 2,102 Election Commission (EC) staff members are involved in overseeing the process, with 141,043 eligible voters expected to participate.
Due to the recent floods, all 387 Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and six Armed Forces personnel members who were eligible for early voting were directed to cast their votes by post due to the need for their services and focus in flood situations.
As a result, only the spouses of three military personnel were able to cast their early votes at the Kijal police station on Nov 28.
The by-election will see a head-to-head competition between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is representing PAS.
The by-election is being held following the decision of the Terengganu Election Court on Sept 26, which annulled the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th General Election.- Bernama
