IPOH: A 27-year-old fisherman in Kerian has been cheated of about RM284,850 after falling victim to a love scam and nonexistent cryptocurrency scheme. The incident was reported to the police on Tuesday (July 25).
The fisherman, who was contacted by a woman on the WeChat messaging app in November, fell in love with her. Later in January, he was introduced to a cryptocurrency scheme that promised lucrative returns.
The victim was convinced that by investing RM30,000, he could get a return of RM200,000. Trusting the woman, the fisherman made 99 online transactions into 21 bank accounts between March 6 and July 15, resulting in a total loss of RM284,850.
The money that was lost in the scam consisted of the victim’s savings, as well as loans from his family members, friends, and employer. The woman kept pressuring the fisherman to continue investing, even after he ran out of money.
When the victim requested the return of his money, he received various excuses and the woman stopped responding to his messages. The Perak police are now investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which pertains to cheating.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri advised the public to be cautious and not easily deceived by love scams and investment schemes that do not exist.
