KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which is currently under Russian occupation, experienced another loss of connection to its main external power line during the night. As a result, the plant had to be switched to a reserve power line with less than half of the capacity of the main line, according to state-owned power generating company Energoatom on Thursday.
Energoatom expressed concern that the plant, which is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, is on the verge of a blackout due to the reduced power capacity of the reserve line. The company warned that such an operating regime is challenging for the reactor plant and could potentially lead to failures in the main equipment of the energy unit. The statement was made via the messaging app Telegram.
The Zaporizhizhia nuclear power plant, consisting of six reactors, has been under the control of the Russian military since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion in February 2022. The plant has become a focal point of the conflict, with both sides blaming each other for shelling incidents around the facility. To prevent accidents, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been working to establish a safety mechanism for the plant.
It is important to note that none of the six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant are currently producing electricity.
