Residents of Kota Kinabalu will have the opportunity to experience a unique fusion of art, light, and community empowerment at Gaya Street downtown on Friday (Feb 2) during the Lampoopalooza 2024 festival.
The event, organized by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), will showcase a laser light show on the iconic STB building, a display of a lit-up water tank installation powered by solar energy, and glow art created by local artists.
“In our commitment to community empowerment, we are incorporating sustainable energy solutions into the festival. Solar panels will power the lit-up water tanks, and after the event, these solar panels will be donated to Kampung Timpayasa in Ulu Papar to provide renewable energy to the village,” said an STB spokesperson.
Currently, the only source of electricity in Kampung Timpayasa is through the villagers’ own small solar PV system.
The water tanks used in the festival will also be donated to several villages, with the details to be identified later. This initiative is a collaboration with upcycling innovator Japson Wong and the non-governmental organization (NGO) Tonibung.
Lampooopalooza is also partnering with the Sabah Art Gallery (SAG) and local artists Azlan Dulikab and Rosmaini Sunarjo to showcase glow-in-the-dark paintings that will come to life as the sun sets.
After the festival, the Glow Art will be donated to rural schools chosen by SAG.
“Lampoopalooza is also working with the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) to showcase the culinary offerings of city hotels through pop-up stalls. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the luminous installation and vibrant artworks while enjoying food and music,” added the Board.
More information about the festival, which will run from 6:30pm to 11pm, can be found on the Lampoopalooza event page on Facebook.
