The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, has announced that the state’s tourism sector will receive a significant boost with the completion of the integrated mixed-development project, “The Peninsula,” in 2028. The announcement was made during the project’s launch on February 8th, with the development being located on a 14.89-acre site in Kota Kinabalu’s central business district.
“The Peninsula” project will involve the construction of service apartment blocks, premium residential towers, office blocks, shopping malls, a multi-storey car park, commercial suites, a four-star hotel, and a five-star hotel. According to Hajiji, this development aligns with the growing trend of the state’s tourism industry, which saw 2.6 million arrivals last year as compared to 1.7 million in 2022.
In addition to “The Peninsula” project, other new hotels are also in various stages of completion in Sabah. These include the Club Med in Kuala Penyu, Alila Resort in Tuaran, Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts in Papar, Avani Hotel, Crowne Plaza, Fairfield by Marriot, and the Sheraton Hotel, all located in Kota Kinabalu. This will contribute to a total of more than 3,000 available rooms in the state, which currently has 26,822 hotel rooms.
