CYBERJAYA: Thousands of Klang Valley businesses will be inspected for tax compliance by officers from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and Royal Malaysian Customs Department as part of Ops Metro 2024, says Datuk Dr Abu Tariq Jamaluddin.

The LHDN chief executive officer said the newly announced joint operation will see over 1,000 officers from both LHDN and Customs investigate businesses around Klang Valley from Monday (Aug 19) to Thursday (Aug 22).

He said the operation would focus on five activities related to improving tax compliance among businesses in both the short and long term.

This included the tax audit, investigation, collection and legal activities towards businesses as well as 3,969 business census visits.

“Customs officers will focus on targeted business census visits with the aim of expanding the tax base by identifying service providers who have the potential to be registered under LHDN.

“Meanwhile, LHDN officers will focus on identifying taxpayers who conduct ‘cash economy’ activities as well as foreigners who are running businesses.

“LHDN officers will also look to spread tax compliance awareness among taxpayers and traders by educating them on its importance and possible repercussions for failing to comply.

“With this, we hope to expand the tax revenue base, reduce the possibility of tax leakage and improve the overall efficiency of our national tax management,” he said in his speech during the launch of Ops Metro 2024 at the agency’s headquarters here on Monday (Aug 19).

Abu added that the police would also work closely with participating Ops Metro officers to monitor and ensure their safety throughout the operation.
