Three firefighters were killed in a plane crash in a remote area of Queensland, Australia, according to police. The incident was reported to emergency authorities at approximately 2.30pm local time (0430 GMT) on Saturday near the outback town of McKinlay, situated around 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) north of Brisbane, the state capital. This tragic event occurred while firefighters in Queensland were working hard to contain bushfires that have resulted in two fatalities, countless destroyed homes, and mandatory evacuations taking place.

In relation to the crash, police stated that “three people on board were located and confirmed deceased.” The light plane had been contracted by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to conduct fire mapping, which is an essential task in such critical situations. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased firefighters, emphasizing that the collective thoughts of all Australians are with them. Albanese made these remarks during a visit to Shanghai on Sunday, as documented in an official transcript.

The incident highlights the risks and sacrifices that firefighters endure while working to protect communities. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the plane crash. The names of the victims have not yet been released, as their families are being informed.

Australia has been grappling with an intense bushfire season, fueled by a prolonged drought and extreme temperatures. The fires have ravaged vast areas of land, destroying homes, displacing residents, and devastating wildlife populations. The country has witnessed widespread support and assistance efforts from both domestic and international partners in managing the crisis.

Queensland, in particular, has been severely impacted by the bushfires, and the loss of three firefighters further compounds the state’s grief. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and stay informed as they continue to combat the fires.

This tragic incident serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by firefighters who selflessly work to protect communities and save lives. It underscores the need for ongoing support, resources, and gratitude towards these dedicated individuals.
