In Petaling Jaya, traces of diesel were discovered near the Cheras Batu 11, Hulu Langat water treatment plant on Tuesday, but there was no disruption in the water supply, according to Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

Jamaliah mentioned that the Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) conducted an investigation and determined that the source of the diesel was from a nearby industrial area.

“LUAS took immediate action by deploying oil pads and two bags of activated carbon weighing 50kg each to contain and prevent the spread of oil into Sungai Langat,” she stated in a press release on Wednesday.

A contractor was also hired to clean up any traces of the diesel, and the work was completed by 9.40pm the same day.

Jamaliah informed that Luas was closely monitoring the situation and conducting checks every 30 minutes to assess the potential impact of the pollution.

The pollution site is situated about 400m away from the water treatment plant.

“Luas’ investigation did not pinpoint the exact cause of the oil leakage,” she mentioned.

“Upon further examination, remnants of diesel were found near some industrial premises, which may be associated with a car wash facility,” she added.

Despite the incident, there was no interruption in the water supply to consumers, Jamaliah stated.

“It is important for the public to remain vigilant against any potential water pollution sources and to report any suspicious activities to LUAS to ensure the continuous operation of the water treatment plant with no disruptions in supply,” she urged.
