KLUANG: Early voting for the Mahkota state assembly by-election concluded at 5pm on Tuesday with the closure of three polling stations: Dewan Mahkota at Kem Mahkota, Dewan Pengaman Zamrud at the Kluang district police headquarters housing complex, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Sultan Sir Ibrahim.
According to the Election Commission (EC), the Mahkota constituency, situated within the Kluang parliamentary area, has 66,318 registered voters. Early voting was conducted for 4,510 military personnel and their spouses, along with 401 police officers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday (Sept 24), the EC reported that as of 3pm, 93.17% of early voters had cast their ballots.
The weather was favourable during the morning, although there was a drizzle in the afternoon. EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun was seen overseeing the voting process.
The Mahkota by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar. A total of 20 polling stations are set to open this Saturday for regular voting.
The by-election is due to the passing of incumbent assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, who died on August 2 while receiving treatment at Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital. – Bernama
