Malaysia was defeated at the final stage of the men’s Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman as they lost 2-5 to Holland on Wednesday (Jan 31).
The title match began with Holland taking the lead in the first minute through Yannick Van Der Drift.
Nevertheless, Malaysian captain Akhimullah Anuar Esook scored in the second minute to keep the game alive.
Holland, who were the favorites, continued to push forward and scored through Pepijn Reyenga in the sixth minute. Van Der Drift also found the net again in the 13th minute, giving them a 3-1 lead in the first half.
Malaysia, under the coaching of Wallace Tan, closed the gap in the second half when Firdaus Omar scored in the 16th minute, but Holland once again extended their lead.
Goals from Sander de Wijn in the 26th minute and Jamie van Aart in the 28th minute confirmed Holland as the champions of the tournament.
Holland had also emerged victorious in the women’s Hockey5s World Cup at the same venue on Saturday (Jan 27).
Hosts Oman secured third place after defeating Poland 3-2 in the playoff.
