Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that Malaysia is on the right path to receive the European Union’s (EU) approval for the recognition of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme in the near future. Fadillah, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, anticipates that the EU leadership will announce this decision no later than June.

He highlighted the importance of MSPO’s recognition to prevent smallholders from being overlooked or marginalized as a result of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) implementation. Fadillah shared this positive development during a press conference after the 2024 annual grant handover ceremony for the Petra Jaya federal constituency’s village development and security committees (JKKKs) in Kuching.

He also mentioned that this information was discussed during a session with an EU delegation that had been in the state since last Wednesday for the launch of Invest Sarawak and Business Day programme. Fadillah led a mission to Brussels, Belgium, in May last year along with other members of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) to convey their stance on the EUDR implementation. As a CPOPC member, Malaysia is dedicated to actively participating and continuing the agenda of countering Western countries’ negative campaigns against palm oil.

During the grant handover ceremony, Fadillah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, distributed grants totaling RM255,000 to 85 JKKKs under his constituency. – Bernama
