Dr. Wan Mohd Rauhan Wan Hussin, a researcher, stated that Antarctica’s changes have a significant impact on Malaysia’s climate. As the continent is known as a natural laboratory, it provides vital information about the Earth’s processes and plays a crucial role in the climate system. It stores about 90% of the Earth’s fresh water and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The ice on the continent affects the ocean’s water circulation and temperature. In addition, the Southern Ocean absorbs around 30% of human-generated carbon dioxide emissions, making it the most powerful carbon sink.

As the deputy director of the National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC), Dr. Wan Mohd Rauhan warned about the potential loss of ecosystems and biodiversity in the Southern Ocean due to global warming, which will reduce its ability to absorb carbon and increase the Earth’s temperature. He emphasized that the effects of global warming on Antarctica could lead to disastrous events like extreme droughts, heat waves, and major floods that could impact Malaysia and the entire planet.

He also commended the Malaysian government’s commitment to Antarctic research, including a contribution of over RM8mil in grants for research and scholarship by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and the Sultan Mizan Antarctica Research Foundation (YPASM). Despite not having an official research base in Antarctica, Malaysia’s financial support demonstrates its desire to participate in Antarctic research and collaborate with scientists from other countries.

Dr. Wan Mohd Rauhan also emphasized the importance of Malaysia’s involvement in global efforts to address climate change, referencing the country’s participation in the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the global temperature rise. He emphasized that Malaysia’s contribution to global warming makes it essential for the country to take responsibility in preserving Antarctica.

“Antarctica cannot escape from the adverse effects of global warming, and the implications of its melting ice would be significant. In simpler terms, what happens in Antarctica affects the entire planet, and Malaysia is not exempt,” Dr. Wan Mohd Rauhan stated, calling for public awareness about the importance of the Antarctic continent and its potential impact.

Overall, Dr. Wan Mohd Rauhan’s statements underscore the urgency of understanding and addressing the implications of Antarctica’s changes on the global climate and the need for concerted efforts by countries, including Malaysia, to contribute to preserving the continent and combating climate change. – Bernama
