Malaysia’s Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, believes that halal food products from Malaysia have the potential to reach not only Muslim markets but also consumers in other countries. He highlighted that Malaysia’s halal industry, particularly processed food items, has already been exported to over 150 countries with a Muslim population of 1.8 billion.

During the launching of the Sabah International Food Expo 2024 at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Mohamad Sabu expressed his optimism about the vast potential of the halal food market. He mentioned that with doubled efforts and support, Malaysian halal products could become a preferred choice globally, not just in Muslim-majority nations.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting local industry players in expanding their products and services internationally. This support would include various incentives such as advisory assistance, training, grants, and tax incentives to boost their presence on the global stage.

Mohamad Sabu also highlighted the importance of technology and digitalization in the agriculture industry for transforming how food is produced, processed, sold, and consumed. He pointed out successful cases where entrepreneurs, especially youth engaged in social media, had increased sales of local products significantly through digital channels.

He encouraged Sabahan youth to tap into this digital opportunity and develop food products from their state that could potentially be marketed nationwide through online and offline platforms. The minister acknowledged the innovative potential of youth in leveraging digital applications for business growth.

Addressing reporters, Mohamad Sabu assured that there would be sufficient supply of beef and chicken meat ahead of Ramadan and Hari Raya festive period. He mentioned collaborations with agencies like the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority and the Domestic Trade Ministry to ensure essential food items remained available in the market.
