PETALING JAYA: Malaysian students in Bangladesh claim that they have no access to the High Commission amidst riots protesting government job quotas.

The allegation was made by X (Twitter) user Akmal Azizan – @akmalaazizan8 – on Saturday (July 20) who said that other other students had tried to seek shelter in the building as they feared for their safety but were turned away.

“When we requested a place for shelter, the Malaysian High Commission said they do not have access,” Sinar Harian quoted Akmal as saying on Sunday (July 21).

“I was only fighting for a safe sanctuary as all other embassies have given shelter to students from their countries,” he added.

It was reported earlier that thousands of Bangladeshi students held demonstrations after the courts ruled to reimpose the quotas on government jobs which were repealed in 2018.

Following this, the government closed all public and private universities on Saturday, at the height of the protests. More than 100 people have been killed since the riots broke on Tuesday (July 16).
