KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong highlighted the importance of not taking the freedom Malaysians have today for granted, as it was achieved through the sacrifices and hard work of the older generation. During his speech at the “Malaysiaku Jiwaku” Merdeka celebration at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Wee, who is the chairman of the TARC Education Foundation board of trustees and the president of MCA, called on the current generation to continue working towards building a better Malaysia for future generations.
The event, which took place at TAR UMT’s main campus in Setapak, marked the first National Day celebration for the university. TAR UMT became a full-fledged university after receiving the certificate of registration from the Higher Education Department on November 7, 2022.
Wee paid tribute to the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, after whom the university is named. He expressed TAR UMT’s pride in being associated with an institution named after the Father of Independence. Wee described Tunku Abdul Rahman as a visionary leader driven by patriotism who fought for Malaysia’s independence.
The MCA president emphasized the university’s commitment to uphold Tunku Abdul Rahman’s legacy of excellence in education, stating that TAR UMT aims to shape minds that excel beyond academics. Wee addressed the audience, which included family members of Tunku Abdul Rahman, such as Tengku Rozani Putra and Tengku Norin Putra.
TAR UMT, which currently has five branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Pahang, Johor, and Sabah, started as a community college in 1969 before being upgraded to university college status known as Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) in 2012.
Other notable attendees at the event included Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai, chairman of TAR UMT’s board of governors; Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, TAR UMT alumni council chairman and board of governors member; Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei, TAR UMT president; and Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo, a member of the TARC Education Foundation board of trustees and the daughter of the late Tun Tan Siew Sin, who played a crucial role in establishing the institution.
