A man in Kota Kinabalu has been given a 14-year jail sentence by the Tawau High Court for the unintentional killing of his wife six years ago.

Jakaria Abu Bakar, 56, was found guilty of stabbing his wife, Norminah Bollok, after suspecting her of having an affair. The incident took place at a house in Kampung Pinggir Bakau in the Semporna district at around 4am on Jan 22, 2017. Justice Dr Lim Hock Leng handed down the sentence.

Justice Lim considered the facts of the case and public interest before delivering the sentence. He noted that it was the accused’s first offence and that the punishment was appropriate. The man’s jail term will start from the date of his arrest on Feb 4, 2019.

The accused was initially charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death sentence upon conviction. The charge was later changed to Section 304(a) of the same law, which provides for a maximum jail term of 30 years and a fine if found guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hurman Hussain handled the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Andy Tay.
