In PETALING JAYA, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated the government has not yet reached a decision regarding the request by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to instruct the streaming application service, Netflix, to take down and prohibit the screening of the documentary ‘Man on the Run’ due to an ongoing court case.
Fahmi mentioned that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had provided some initial views but emphasized that the legal aspects need to be carefully considered due to the ongoing court case before any further announcements are made.
Demanding that the government instruct Netflix to take down and prohibit the airing of the documentary related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Najib’s lawyer highlighted that ‘Man on the Run’ is sub judice and detrimental to Najib’s defence in the ongoing 1MDB trial.
Fahmi also indicated that he plans to explore the possibility of involving local artists to produce special artworks that could be used as official gifts for the government, expressing his intentions to work with MyCreative Ventures Group (MyCreative) to support local artists to produce special pieces for special occasions.
“I will hold a meeting soon with the MCMC, especially to scrutinise the legal aspects before making any further announcements,” Fahmi told reporters after inaugurating the ceramic art exhibition “Raaqoo, ‘Life Magnified – The Main Show’ by ceramic artist Adil Ghani here on Saturday (Jan 13).
Furthermore, the Communications Minister also highlighted MyCreative’s support for local artists, emphasizing the potential collaboration to work on gifts like this to support the local artists.
He also emphasized the need to reconsider the use of common gifts and explore the possibility of finding local artists to produce special pieces for special occasions, indicating that it would be a sign of support for local artists.
The discussions with MyCreative will explore how to work with local artists to create official gifts for the government, reflecting the government’s support for local artists and the arts in general.
Overall, it appears that discussions are ongoing regarding the government’s response to Najib’s request, taking into consideration the legal aspects and the potential involvement of local artists in producing official gifts for the government.
This indicates that the government is treading carefully in handling this issue.
