In efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s global trade engagements, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) and Star Media Group (SMG) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to combine expertise and resources from both entities. This strategic collaboration is the first of its kind between the two parties, with the aim of enhancing Matrade’s trade initiatives and expanding opportunities for its current events and services.
The partnership also seeks to enhance media value and provide coverage to Malaysian delegates participating in Matrade’s trade promotion trips. The MOU was signed by SMG’s group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt and Matrade’s Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, witnessed by SMG’s chief business officer Lydia Wang and Matrade’s deputy chief executive officer (export acceleration) Abu Bakar Yusof, under the watchful eye of Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.
The MOU reflects the longstanding collaboration between both entities, with Matrade offering support for SMG’s initiatives aimed at showcasing Malaysia’s trade industry accomplishments, such as the Star Outstanding Business Awards (Soba) and the Export Excellence Awards (EEA). As the official patron for EEA, Matrade has been instrumental in the development of the awards, providing judges and education on international market potential to participants.
The collective efforts between Matrade and SMG aim to elevate and recognize achievements within Malaysia’s trade sector. This collaboration designates SMG as Matrade’s official media partner, covering mission trips, trade fairs, and large-scale projects. Matrade’s global outreach and trade initiatives will expand in 2024, with export acceleration missions in Asia and Africa, trade exhibitions in Europe and the Middle East, and various mission trips and trade fairs planned across different countries.
One significant event is the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) trade exhibition in Dubai, part of the Middle East Organic and Natural Product Expo from Nov 18 to 20 this year. With a target sales goal of RM1bil, this event highlights Matrade’s commitment to the global prominence of the halal industry. Other crucial milestones include Mihas Kuala Lumpur, the 21st China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO), and the Malaysia-China Summit (MCS), demonstrating the dedication of both Matrade and SMG to enhancing trade relations and fostering strategic alliances.
