The government has announced a maximum fare of RM599 for one-way economy class flights from the peninsula to Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, specifically for travel three days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri. This measure is aimed at assisting individuals in their journey back to their hometowns for the festive season in April, stated Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Loke highlighted that setting a maximum price for flights is a part of the government’s wider strategy to aid people in travelling during various festivals throughout the year, including Chinese New Year, Gawai, Keamatan, and Christmas. For flights within the peninsula where alternative transportation options like buses and trains are available, no maximum price will be enforced.

While early ticket buyers may secure cheaper prices, Loke cautioned that prices could escalate in case of ticket shortages. Any fare exceeding RM599 during the three-day period before Aidilfitri will be subsidized by the government.

In determining the exact date for Aidilfitri and finalizing the implementation of the maximum ticket price, Loke mentioned that the ministry will seek input from all relevant parties, including the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs).

“This year’s Hari Raya is projected to occur on Wednesday or earlier. The peak period for people returning to their hometowns is expected to be the Saturday and Sunday before Raya, so the implementation of the maximum ticket price may be set for that weekend,” Loke explained.

Additionally, Loke disclosed that certain airlines may introduce fixed prices for specific night flights and offer supplementary flight services. He cited AirAsia’s upcoming special deal featuring affordable fixed fares for night flights, set to be launched in March and available only a few times a day.

Responding to queries regarding individuals renting helicopters for festive travels, Loke affirmed that all flights, including helicopter services, must be registered with the relevant authorities to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
