PETALING JAYA: MCA’s Chan Quin Er has urged the authorities to quickly apprehend those responsible for the car bomb incident involving lawyer Siti Kasim. In her statement, Chan stressed that this incident threatens the fundamental constitutional right to freedom of speech.
Chan emphasized that as a democratic nation, it is the duty of all Malaysians to defend Siti Kasim’s right to express her views without fear of unlawful reprisal. She added that disagreement with her opinions should not lead to violence and intimidation.
“The attempted car bomb attack serves as a concerning reminder of the importance of promoting open dialogue and constructive discourse in our society,” Chan stated in a press release on Sunday (July 23).
In Chan’s view, resorting to violence to silence dissenting voices demonstrates an inability to present valid counter arguments and a complete lack of willingness to engage in peaceful, rational, and respectful debate.
Last Friday (July 21), two bottles filled with wires were discovered behind the rear tire of Siti’s car. It is believed that the bottles contained an improvised explosive device (IED). Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor confirmed that police received a distress call at 12.58pm and promptly dispatched the Bomb Squad.
“The Bomb Squad safely disposed of both bottles that were suspected to be an IED,” he said. The Fire and Rescue Department also provided assistance.
Despite the bomb scare, Siti Kasim proclaimed that she will continue to speak out against the use of religion in politics.
