PETALING JAYA: Two suspects are under investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly posting offensive comments on a social media platform.
The MCMC said in a statement on Tuesday (July 16) that the two men made offensive and provocative remarks on a replay of a Parliament session on the TikTok platform on July 9.
A statement from both suspects was recorded on Monday (July 15) after the commission received complaints from the public.
“In an operation conducted, the commission seized SIM cards and smartphones belonging to the two suspects, which were used to upload the offensive comments, to aid the investigation,” it said.
Earlier, the MCMC had issued a Notice of Attendance to both suspects in accordance with established procedures.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
The Act carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a one-year prison sentence, or both, upon conviction.
This section prohibits the creation or transmission of communication that is offensive, obscene, or indecent with the intent to annoy or harass others.
The MCMC also reminded the public that any misuse of communication services and social media will be taken seriously.
“The public should not use network services and online applications to make any postings or comments that are against the laws of the country,” it said.
