KOTA KINABALU: Sabah port authorities are taking measures to resolve the congestion issue at the Sapanggar Bay Container Port (SBCP) near here and avoid potential surcharges.
Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said this after receiving a briefing from Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) over port congestion on Saturday (July 13).
“To tackle the issue, the port management has temporarily relocated the roll-on/roll-off (Roro) operations back to Kota Kinabalu Port.
“The port management is also rearranging the container yard layout,” added Phoong.
The SPSB managing director, Datuk Ng Kiat Min, conducted the briefing.
Concerns over congestion surcharges at the Sapangar port from July 16 were voiced.
Phoong said additional workforce from third-party sources has been brought in.
In a Thursday (July 11) statement, SPSB said it would be clearing container backlogs by the end of the month.
The Sabah Logistics Council (SLC), an entity under the Sabah Works Ministry, said on Tuesday (July 9) that it would help to solve the issue.
