MUAR: A 27-year-old medical officer has lost over RM113,000 of his savings after being scammed into accepting a fake job on the side.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the victim lodged a police report on Tuesday (Oct 15).
“The victim claimed he was conned by an individual offering a side job to earn extra income. He came across this person through a social media app,” he said.
After contacting the individual to inquire about the job, the victim was instructed to complete a survey on energy efficiency through a provided link, with a promise of a 20% commission upon completion.
ACP Raiz Mukhliz added that the victim, enticed by the prospect of high returns, signed up as an agent through an online portal.
However, to access the survey link, the victim made 14 financial transactions from his savings to five different bank accounts, amounting to RM113,086.
“The portal showed that the victim had supposedly earned RM130,000 in profits. However, he was then told by the scammer to make further payments to withdraw his earnings,” he said.
When the victim refused to make additional payments, he realised he had been cheated.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
ACP Raiz Mukhliz urged the public to be cautious and take extra precautions, especially with monetary transactions.
