The Melaka Government is willing to provide special incentives to attract airlines to operate commercial flights from Melaka International Airport (LTAM) in Batu Berendam. This decision comes after the recent departure of service providers, and the aim is to encourage more airlines to offer their services at LTAM. Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer, the chairman of the state works, infrastructure, public amenities, and transport committee, explained that two airlines had stopped their operations at LTAM due to a lack of passengers and high operating costs.
In his statement on September 8, Hameed Mytheen confirmed that he had met with six airlines in an attempt to bring domestic and international flights to LTAM. However, he revealed that there have been no positive responses so far, but the efforts to attract airlines to LTAM will continue. Hameed Mytheen also mentioned that a global air show will be held at LTAM from September 29 to October 1, with the participation of aviation industry players from Australia, Russia, Thailand, Singapore and local government agencies.
This response from Hameed Mytheen is in reference to a previous report by The Star on September 5, which stated that there were no longer any commercial flights operating at LTAM. The Star visited the airport and observed that the check-in desks, baggage carousel, and other counters had been empty since last month, with flights to destinations such as Pekan Baru in Indonesia and Penang no longer available.
