MELAKA: The Melaka government has reassured the public that there is an ample water supply for the upcoming Hari Raya festive season despite concerns over the El Nino phenomenon. Melaka works, infrastructure, public amenities, and transport committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer stated that the total water storage in all three dams in the state is at comfortable levels.
Hameed Mytheen mentioned, “The current water levels are not critical, and we have enough stored water to last until June,” after visiting a pump house at Ayer Keroh Lake on Thursday (March 21). The Durian Tunggal Dam’s storage capacity is at 80%, the Just Dam at 95.7%, and the Asahan Dam at 95.5%.
“Our reservoir capacity could sustain us for the next two months even if there is no rainfall,” he added. Hameed Mytheen also revealed that the state is taking necessary precautions to prepare for a prolonged period of dry weather.
He advised the public to use water judiciously during this time and encouraged them to report any water leakages they come across.
Additionally, Hameed Mytheen clarified that despite claims from some quarters, the hot weather has not significantly reduced the water supply at Ayer Keroh Lake. He explained, “The water from the lake is being pumped out to be channeled into Sungai Melaka to increase the daily supply to 15 million liters.”
The pumping work, which began on February 4 and ended on March 8, was paused due to a drastic drop in the water levels at the lake.
Ayer Keroh Lake has been designated under Section 62(1) of the National Land Code 1965 for supplying raw water during periods of hot weather.
