PETALING JAYA: As Tropical Storm Trami blows through Vietnam, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of severe thunderstorms heavy rain and strong winds for northern parts of the peninsula.

In a statement on Sunday (Oct 27), it said adverse weather is expected until 4pm in Perlis; Kedah (Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu); Penang; Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta).

Typhoon Trami has claimed more than 100 lives in the Philippines and the country is bracing for a new cyclone and the storm’s possible return. More than 4.2 million people there have been affected and early estimates place damage to agriculture and infrastructure at 291 million pesos (S$6.5 million).

It was downgraded to a tropical storm when it made landfall at about 325km northeast of Da Nang, Vietnam on Saturday (Oct 26).
