MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – At least five people were killed and several others injured when the roof of a church in northern Mexico collapsed during Sunday mass. Local authorities and media reported that rescuers are currently searching through the rubble for any survivors.
Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when the church roof gave way, releasing clouds of gray smoke and causing the yellow brick outer walls to tumble down.
The civil protection body responsible for Tamaulipas state, which shares a border with Texas, released photos of the destroyed church in Ciudad Madero and stated that its workers were actively involved in the search for survivors.
According to Mexico’s Reforma newspaper, Mayor Adrian Oseguera of Ciudad Madero confirmed that a child was among the five people killed in the incident.
Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico expressed that the collapse occurred while worshipers were receiving communion and asked for prayers for the survivors.
“We are currently doing everything necessary to rescue those who are still trapped under the debris,” Bishop Armando said in a recorded message that was shared on social media.
