Mexico Energy Secretary Rocio Nahle has submitted her resignation and will step down immediately, as announced by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday. This decision comes following indications from Nahle that she may run for the governorship of Veracruz state. Nahle, a 59-year-old chemical engineer, has been in office since late 2018 and the state of Veracruz, which is abundant in oil and gas and shares borders with the Gulf of Mexico, is considering her as a potential candidate.
Lopez Obrador expressed his appreciation for Nahle’s work, particularly on the Dos Bocas oil refinery project in Tabasco, which is set to reach full capacity this year. The goal of this refinery is to contribute to Mexico’s energy independence, although it has yet to enter the market with its products.
In the upcoming elections next year, Nahle may stand as a candidate for the governorship, alongside Sergio Gutierrez Luna from the MORENA party and Miguel Angel Yunes from the conservative PAN party. Yunes, a former Veracruz governor, is interested in returning to his previous position. The current governor of Veracruz is Cuitlahuac Garcia from the MORENA party.
Nahle expressed her gratitude to Lopez Obrador through a message on the social messaging platform X, stating that it has been an honor to serve and declaring, “Mission accomplished!”
