The results of an opinion poll conducted through early August showed that former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has slightly increased her lead in the race to become the Mexican ruling party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The survey, conducted by polling firm Parametria from July 30 to August 4, revealed that 32% of the general public supported Sheinbaum’s candidacy for the leftist ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), compared to 30% in the previous month’s poll.
According to the same survey, Sheinbaum’s closest rival, ex-foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, maintained a stable level of support for the MORENA candidacy at 20%. Although Ebrard remains the most well-known candidate, the gap between him and Sheinbaum has narrowed, as indicated by the poll.
Sheinbaum and Ebrard are currently the most popular contenders for the presidential candidacy, which MORENA plans to announce on September 6 based on national polling. None of the other candidates from MORENA reached a support level of 10%.
The polling data suggests that MORENA is favored to win the upcoming election, fueled by the popularity of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. However, the entrance of Senator Xochitl Galvez as a contender for the main opposition ticket has sparked energy among MORENA’s adversaries.
After excluding voters who expressed no preference, the poll revealed that MORENA enjoyed the support of 57% of the respondents. Two parties currently allied with MORENA received an additional 8% of support, while a three-way alliance of opposition parties garnered a combined support of 25%.
Another daily tracking poll conducted by research firm Consulta Mitofsky also indicates that Sheinbaum has recently gained momentum in the race. Although Ebrard had narrowed her lead to 6.5 points by July 27, Sheinbaum has since regained her advantage and now holds a lead of over 9 points, according to Mitofsky’s latest figures.
Parametria, which conducted the survey, stated that it interviewed 800 adult voters in face-to-face interviews. The survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.5 percentage points. The poll also revealed that 68% of respondents were aware of Ebrard, while 65% were familiar with Sheinbaum.
