Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has commended Susie Wolff for taking legal action against the governing FIA, expressing hope that it will enhance transparency and accountability in the sport. Wolff, a prominent figure in motorsport and the wife of Mercedes Formula One head Toto Wolff, revealed that she had lodged a criminal complaint in France against the FIA for a conflict of interest investigation from last year.

Her decision came after FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem was exonerated of alleged interference in two races by its ethics committee. Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton lauded Wolff’s bravery for speaking out in an environment where voices are often silenced.

“I’m incredibly proud of her for taking this step outside of the traditional norms,” Hamilton told reporters at Albert Park on Thursday. “There’s a significant lack of accountability within the sport, within the FIA, with things happening behind closed doors.”

He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability to instill trust in the sport and its governing bodies, stressing that fans also deserve these qualities to believe in the integrity of Formula One.

When approached by Reuters for a response to Wolff’s legal action and Hamilton’s remarks, the FIA did not immediately provide a comment. In December, the FIA initiated an investigation into the Wolffs following reports of a team principal receiving confidential information from a commercial rights holder’s employee.

However, the inquiry was halted after all nine other F1 teams voiced support for Susie Wolff. Her legal pursuit comes amidst internal discord at Red Bull, where team principal Christian Horner was cleared of alleged misconduct following a complaint from a female employee.

The woman, who remains unidentified, was suspended after her grievance was dismissed by an independent probe but is appealing the decision, as reported by British media. Reports also suggest she raised a formal complaint with the FIA, a claim yet to be confirmed by the governing body.

Hamilton expressed hope that Wolff’s actions can drive positive change within Formula One, particularly for women in the sport. He highlighted the challenges women face in a male-dominated environment and the importance of upholding core values, especially in relation to inclusivity.

Harnessing a similar sentiment, Mercedes driver George Russell echoed Hamilton’s call for transparency in decision-making by Formula One authorities. He stressed the significance of sending the right message to all supporters of the sport, emphasizing the need to address issues rather than overlooking them.

As discussions around accountability and fairness continue within Formula One, the actions of figures like Wolff and Hamilton are contributing to the ongoing dialogue about promoting inclusivity and integrity in the sport. With their advocacy for transparency, they are championing a culture of openness and responsibility that could shape the future of Formula One.
