(Reuters) – Six-times MotoGP champion Marc Marquez is eager to see if he can still compete for titles after making the switch from Honda to Ducati satellite team Gresini Racing this season. His departure from Honda marked the end of an 11-year partnership as the team struggled to keep up with Ducati’s strong performance in recent years.
Marquez, a Spanish rider, made the move to Gresini Racing in October, joining the Italian manufacturer that dominated MotoGP in the previous season. Despite high expectations, Marquez remains cautious due to his challenges over the past four years.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix, Marquez emphasized the need to manage expectations. He acknowledged the talented riders on Ducati’s team and expressed his eagerness to learn from them, recognizing the competitive environment he has entered.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, Marquez mentioned that his last championship victory was in 2019, before a major injury in the opening race of the 2020 season sidelined him for the rest of the year. Since his return, Marquez has faced difficulties, with his last race win occurring in October 2021.
Responding to questions about his performance decline, the 31-year-old rider admitted that he would evaluate his capabilities throughout the upcoming season. Despite experiencing challenges, Marquez still managed to be the top Honda rider last year, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Marquez’s exceptional career record includes six championships in seven years, with only one third-place finish. The setback in 2020 significantly impacted his trajectory, leading to a challenging period that he aims to overcome in the current season.
Looking ahead, Marquez expressed his focus on feeling competitive once again. He clarified that success for him does not necessarily mean winning the championship but rather being in contention for the top positions in races.
As he embarks on this new chapter with Gresini Racing, Marquez is determined to answer the lingering questions surrounding his performance and capabilities, emphasizing the importance of regaining his competitive edge on the track.
