An MP has expressed concerns about the future of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) if it is held in Terengganu. Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub) raised this issue during the Budget 2024 debates at Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 30), directed towards Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim. The concerns arise from recent controversy over Terengganu’s decision to ban female gymnasts from participating in the Sukma games due to their outfits, which were considered inappropriate according to Islamic dress code.

Chow Yu Hui questioned Adam Adli, stating, “If gymnastic outfits are considered inappropriate, is the ministry worried that the sport of diving may be next to be banned due to the diving outfits?”

Terengganu had earlier announced on Oct 6 that it would not include women’s gymnastics in the upcoming Sukma games next year. The controversy deepened when Terengganu Gymnastics Association president Abdul Razak Mat Amin confirmed on the same day that the female gymnasts would be transferred to the wushu team for Sukma next year.

In response to the concerns, Adam Adli mentioned that the ministry has already had discussions with the parents of the athletes and the Terengganu gymnastic associations to address this issue. The ministry will also be meeting with the Terengganu sports executive councilor to find a resolution.

Addressing the possibility of the exclusion of gymnastics and diving from Sukma if it were held in Terengganu, Chow Yu Hui asked Adam Adli. In reply, Adam Adli expressed confidence that any potential issues can be resolved through future discussions with the Terengganu state government.

On Oct 28, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that she will hold further discussions with the Terengganu sports executive councilor to find a common understanding and the best solution to safeguard the welfare of female gymnasts in Terengganu.
