NEW YORK (Reuters) – A construction crane in Manhattan caught fire and collapsed on Wednesday morning, causing injuries and traffic congestion, according to authorities and local media sources.
Emergency crews were promptly dispatched to the scene and blocked off surrounding streets and the Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey during the busy rush hour period.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of 10th and 11th avenues and West 41st and 42nd streets, near the Hudson Yards complex, as reported by the New York City Police Department on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. The NYPD advised people to stay away from the area.
According to WCBS 880 radio, one firefighter and one civilian sustained minor injuries.
Social media videos captured the moment when the top section of the crane broke off and plummeted to the ground, narrowly missing a nearby building. Simultaneously, flames and smoke emerged from the crane’s cabin.
