KUALA LUMPUR: The license of low-cost carrier MYAirline Sdn Bhd will be temporarily suspended, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is expected to make an announcement on this matter later today (Oct 16), he informed.
“The company is still in existence; however, it will be suspending operations while searching for investors.
“Although it is a commercial issue, from the perspective of the authorities, we will temporarily suspend their license,” he stated during a press briefing at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) earlier today (Oct 16).
MYAirline recently had its air operator’s certificate (AOC) extended by the CAAM, authorizing it to operate scheduled commercial flights for another two years.
The AOC expired on September 30, whereas its air service license (ASL) from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will expire on November 14, 2023.
Loke also emphasized that MyAirline must recognize its responsibility towards affected passengers and staff.
“The most important aspect right now is to ensure the protection of consumers’ rights, including their entitlement to refunds, which is crucial for us,” he stated.
Loke added, “The welfare of MyAirline personnel is also significant and should be taken care of.”
Loke then mentioned that MyAirline is expected to hold a press conference today (Oct 16), where the management will have to come forward to provide explanations and assurances to their passengers and staff members.
In the Parliament special chambers, a debate on MyAirline will also take place this afternoon (Oct 16), with Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibullah answering questions on the issue as Loke is scheduled to travel overseas for official matters.
MyAirline abruptly suspended operations on October 12, citing financial issues. Loke had previously mentioned that the airline had not informed his ministry or Mavcom about its decision.
He also stated that approximately 125,000 passengers, with tickets worth RM20 million, have been impacted by MYAirline’s sudden halt in operations.
