Police in Germany announced on Saturday that they had discovered the body of a 24-year-old Mexican woman who had gone missing in Berlin at the end of July. The disappearance of Maria Fernanda Sanchez had received widespread attention in Mexico.
The authorities revealed that a passerby walking along a bridge in Berlin’s Adlershof neighborhood found Sanchez’s body floating in a canal. Interpol had previously issued a yellow search notice for her.
In a statement, the police declared, “No third-party blame can be assumed,” but they confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
On the social media platform X, otherwise known as Twitter, the Mexican Foreign Ministry announced that German authorities had reported finding the body of a woman matching Sanchez’s description.
Earlier in the week, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his intention to appeal to the German president for additional support in the search for Sanchez. Local media sources suggest that she was pursuing her master’s degree in Germany.
Several days after her disappearance, the Berlin police released a statement revealing that there were “indications” that Sanchez was experiencing an “exceptional psychological situation.”
