PETALING JAYA: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has announced that a total of 119 shelters will be constructed on highways nationwide as part of the Bitara Madani initiative. These shelters aim to provide motorcyclists with a safe refuge during bad weather conditions.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Works Ministry and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), involves 33 highway concessionaires. Out of the 119 new shelters, 40 are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with the remaining shelters scheduled for completion next year. These shelters will complement the existing 353 shelters already in place.
Minister Nanta highlighted the importance of this project, citing frequent accidents involving motorcyclists during rainy days. He expressed concern over motorcyclists seeking shelter on the emergency lane, which poses significant dangers to both the riders and other road users.
Looking ahead, Nanta expressed hope for continued collaboration between the ministry, LLM, and highway concessionaires to introduce further initiatives for the safety and comfort of motorcyclists. He stressed the high-risk nature of motorcycle accidents and emphasized the need for additional measures to protect this vulnerable group of road users.
In addition, Minister Nanta reminded motorcyclists to exercise caution when using the emergency lane, as it is not exclusively intended for their use. The emergency lane may be used by any vehicle in need of stopping due to emergency factors. He urged motorcyclists to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety by utilizing the provided shelters if necessary.
The Bitara Madani initiative aims to enhance the safety and convenience of motorcyclists by providing designated shelters on highways. With the construction of 119 new shelters, motorcyclists will have increased access to safe spaces during adverse weather conditions, ultimately reducing the risks associated with seeking shelter on emergency lanes.
