The National Unity Ministry is considering the establishment of an accreditation body for community mediators to enhance their professionalism in carrying out their responsibilities. In a statement released on Saturday (Feb 24), the ministry mentioned that it would also introduce measures to strengthen the role of community mediators by raising qualifications and competency standards, as well as amending the Neighbourhood Watch Act 2012 to incorporate the function of community mediators.
The ministry highlighted that its focus for the year was to set up more community mediation centres in various states. “In 2024, the ministry aims to expand mediation services by establishing centres in Perlis (KRT Pekan Pauh Community Mediation Centre), Putrajaya (Federal Territory Community Mediation Centre) and Melaka (Alor Gajah District Community Mediation Centre),” the statement said.
Currently, there are a total of 564 community mediators, which include 163 unity officers, 379 members of the Neighbourhood Watch Area (KRT) committee, and 22 religious non-governmental organizations nationwide. – Bernama
