KOTA KINABALU: The chairman of the Sabah Polo Association, Johnson Or, has denied allegations of mistreatment of horses under the association’s care. Or addressed media reports and claims that horses belonging to the association were malnourished and treated cruelly, stating that the animals depicted in the circulated images and videos were actually owned by a privately-owned establishment. He further clarified that the association had already sold off its horses a few months ago, emphasizing that the horses referred to in the publication neither belonged to the association nor were they neglected or mistreated. Or clarified, “The horses referred to in the (article)… belong to an establishment using the association’s premises to stable its horses.”

Or placed the responsibility for the maintenance and care of the horses on their owners, stating that the association is against any form of cruelty or neglect towards animals, especially horses. He expressed appreciation for the media’s role in bringing the matter to light and assured that the state Veterinary Services Department (DVS) had already checked on the horses in question. Or expressed trust and confidence in the department’s ability to conduct a professional, diligent, and fair investigation and urged patience while the probe proceeded.

Recently, a local publication reported on the distressing condition of horses in Tuaran. The article included photos of emaciated horses as well as injuries on the animals, including maggot-infested legs. This sparked public outrage against the Sabah Polo Association. It is estimated that there are approximately 10 horses in such condition, and officers from the DVS have been dispatched to attend to their needs.
