KUALA LUMPUR: A new education development plan is currently in the works and set to be implemented after 2027, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said this was part of efforts to improve the quality of the national education system.

“The new curriculum’s framework will comprise a curriculum based on standards and competency.

“This will encourage more active learning among students and ensure a more meaningful and authentic learning and evaluation experience,” he said during question time on Tuesday (July 9).

He added that the Malaysian Education Development Plan (PPPM) (2013-2025) has shown positive results throughout its 11 years of implementation.

To further empower the coming system, Wong said a taskforce was formed to spearhead the national education system’s framework, direction and development.

“We are currently analysing the present PPPM and identifying which areas require improvement for the new system,” he said.

Wong was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai) who asked about the ministry’s readiness to reevaluate the quality and time frame of the national education system.

In a supplementary question, Wee also asked about the ministry’s readiness to remove certain subjects whose syllabuses were seemingly irrelevant with current demands.

He also asked which subjects were currently being considered to be empowered.

To this, Wong said the Education Ministry had placed an emphasis on digital education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for the existing education curriculum.

“Through combined efforts, we can further improve the national education system,” he said.

Wong said engagements on the new education development plan were also currently ongoing nationwide.

“We have also urged the public to present their views on this,” he said.
